5 Workouts to Do When You're Stressed AF
My exercise routine most weeks consists of yoga and a lot of walking. Sometimes I'll go for a jog, or take a barre class, but that about sums it up. I'm not a huge fan of cardio because I typically find it exhausting, particularly after a long day at work. Yoga makes me centered and brings a sense of calm to my mind, whereas cardio sometimes leaves me feeling frantic. Recently though, I've really been craving a good sweat session. A seriously intense, turn your mind off, get all of your aggression out, get rid of the anxiety cardio-power-hour. With the wedding just a few months away, I've been feeling the weight on my shoulders. I go to bed thinking about veils and nails and bouquets and bands, and it's just thrown me off!
Yesterday, I wanted to shake it off and turn my frown upside down, so I went to an amazing cathartic-dance-yoga-ish class. It really helped me forget my to-do list for an hour, and I left the class feeling lighter, brighter and as though I'd worked through some of my mental baggage. I wanted to share a list of some of my favorite workouts to do when you need to shed. The ones that will make you laugh, cry, focus, release, and get back with it.
p.s these are shared in no particular order
I am not typically into spin, but SoulCycle is about more than the actual exercise. They have kickass instructors, great music, push you to push yourself, and encourage you to get out of your head. I also love how they light candles at the end of the class and usually play a slow song last so that you can have time to just breathe, or if you're like me, cry
2. The Class by Taryn Toomey
This was the workout that I tried yesterday. The Class was a fantastic combination of workout for both your body and brain. Two of my favorite moves: beating our legs to "get rid of stuck energy" and pulsing our arms "to ask the universe for something we need." Both worked for me and felt extremely meditative. (The Class is currently available in NYC + LA)
I love kickboxing (particularly CKO) because you can take your aggression out on a punching bag rather than on your loved ones. The combination of cardio + boxing really works for me as I'm an amateur boxer!
4. Hot Vinyasa Yoga
Nothing like a series of sweaty vinyasas to get the blood pumping! Plus the heat really makes me sweat which feels cleansing and allows me to go deeper into purifying poses like twists.
My favorite dance class in NYC is at 305 Fitness because their music and choreography is consistently fresh + fabulous. The room gets dark (like a club) and you are moving around so much, trying to keep up with the moves that there is simply no way to focus on your problems. Highly recommend.
