Hi + Hosting Holy Grail

Hi + Hosting Holy Grail

Hello darling readers!

Thank you for visiting my site. My intention is to teach you how to be a confident host. I want you to look forward to having friends over. Come here for food and flower inspiration, table-setting tips and musings on modern hospitality and etiquette. I'll occasionally surprise you with bonus features about fashion, music, travel, and family.

To get started, I'm going to share three rules that you should always keep in mind; let's call them the holy grail of hosting. If you only remember one thing I post, let it be these rules:

  1. When hosting, mi casa es su casa, is the proverb to live by. If you know how to make your guests feel at home, bad wine or noisy neighbors won't ruin the experience you share together. A good host goes out of his/her way to make a guest feel at home. This may mean letting your friends keep their shoes on, or running out at the last minute to pick up their favorite beverage. I understand you're not a hotel concierge, but wherever possible, be thoughtful. People will remember it, and be grateful for it.
  2. More is merrier. Always overestimate how much food and drink you will need. Clearly I was raised by overfeeding Jewish mothers and grandmothers. However, there is no worse feeling then running out of wine 30 minutes into a party, or having someone feel guilty about eating the last cracker. I promise you, it won't be that much more expensive in the long run, and how great will it feel to be prepared?
  3. Just have fun with it. Don't apologize for a messy living room or feel self-conscious about feeding your friend who is a professional chef. Inviting someone to your home takes courage and is a gift in and of itself. Own your space. Walk and welcome with a high head and a big smile, and it'll all be great in the end, pinky swear. This motto, "just have fun with it" also serves as good life wisdom, shared by my beloved great-grandmother Riva. Live a life that makes you feel proud every day. Open your home, open your heart, open your mind to all that's to come.

Okay, wow! You made it this far. We're off to a great start.

More to come,
Jane
