All in Must Have

Where to Eat, Shop & Hangout in Boerum Hill, Brooklyn

I live in a quaint, historic Brooklyn neighborhood called Boerum Hill, which is south of Brooklyn Heights, and north of the more popular Cobble Hill! It's quiet, beautiful, and has some fantastic shops and restaurants. Boerum Hill has a very old-world feel, with tree-lined streets, and dreamy brownstone-lined blocks. It's a perfect place to come eat, shop, explore, and get a taste of Brooklyn. Boerum Hill is much more toned-down than say Williamsburg, but I find the curation of stores to be a bit fresher than those further south in Park Slope, so you should come give it a try! Here are my go-tos for eating, drinking, shopping and chilling in the neighborhood!

Moving Into A New Kitchen? Here's What You'll Need!

How the heck do you stock a new kitchen? What are the essentials, the non-negotiable, the things that can wait. Where do you buy this stuff and where can you find some great deals? Be Like Family is at your service with a handy-dandy checklist for the things you need when moving. Please keep in mind this list is aimed at a beginner cook (no sous-vides tools here) who is either living alone or as a couple.

the weekend cast

Good morning ladies + gents! I'm up early this morning to write the weekend cast. Procrastination: it happens to the best of us. I'm sipping on a luxurious latté and looking forward to a quiet morning in the office *fingers crossed*. Also, dreaming about the fluffy milk bread sandwiches we ate in Tokyo. The breakfast pictured above was on our first day out and about. Oh how I miss it!

Around the web this week we've got a spin on traditional cookies, skin supplements (both internal and external), funky earrings that make me want to book a flight to Havana, the most beautiful smoothies you've ever seen, and more right below.

My plan this weekend is to check out rockaway beach with my friend Val, and eat all of the fish tacos in sight. I also want to see a movie and maybe go on a day trip with my brother. Seems like tomorrow will be a rainy saturday, so maybe we'll try an extensive cooking project like homemade croissants. Do you have recommendations for what to do on a rainy day in Brooklyn? And how about you? What do you have planned?

Undoubtedly the best part of summer is the simple fact that weekends are almost always spent elsewhere. I'm realizing that for the last month, we've gone someplace or another to soak up the sun and get in a swim or two. The cute polaroid photo of me up top is from our recent camping trip! But this weekend, the tides have turned and I'm staying put. Brandon is off on his bachelor party (if you're reading this B, behave!) and I'm holding down the fort in Brooklyn.

Is Your Sunscreen Killing the Coral Reefs?

When we arrived on the beach one morning, I reached for my trusty La Roche-Posay bottle. Brandon asked me if we had any reef-safe sunscreen, and I am embarrassed to say I had no clue what he was talking about. I’d never even heard of such a thing, and I am someone who buys and invests in sunscreen frequently. I shook my head, and proceeded to slather on the cooling French SPF. I thought about it more as I sat in the water for almost an hour. How many people are there swimming in an ocean right this minute? How many of those people will swim more than once in that same day? Are all of them wearing sunscreen? Is all of that sunscreen washing off into the ocean?

Inspired by one of my favorite blogs, Cup of Jo, I've decided to do a weekly roundup post sharing some odds and ends on the internet that I've found or read or cooked or loved. I hope you enjoy checking these out!
